Mitochondrial Impairment in Long COVID-19

Research suggests that SARS-CoV-2 can impair mitochondrial function, contributing to long COVID symptoms like fatigue and cognitive impairment. Viral infections can destabilize mitochondria, essential for cellular energy production. Studies have shown that individuals suffering from post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC) often exhibit symptoms similar to myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), linked to mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondria produce energy and regulate oxidative stress; when compromised, they generate excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to inflammation and cellular damage. Clinical findings indicate increased ROS and cytokines in COVID-19 patients, suggesting persistent mitochondrial dysfunction even months post-infection. Optimising nutrition and supporting mitochondrial health through diet and lifestyle changes may help mitigate these long-term effects. For more information, visit IFM
